Ah, with summer holidays coming up, many of us are going to take the opportunity to escape to a hotter, and more exotic location. Of course with that comes packing. Some love it, some hate it, but here are some hacks on packing that’ll make it so much easier and allow you to properly relax and enjoy your well-deserved holiday!
-
Roll, don’t fold
Rolling takes up less space, but makes the suitcase heavier. Folding takes up more space, but keeps your suitcase light. This piece of advice is from experience (literally packed my suitcase one way, weighed it, then packed it the other way, and weighed it again). It’s also better for clothes that crinkle and crease to roll, rather than fold, to avoid doing ironing when you really should be sunbathing or catching some waves. Personally, I find it easier to keep my suitcase organized and find things I need.
-
Use packing cubes
Packing cubes great: they’ll keep you organized and more conscientious of what you’re bringing so you don’t overpack. You can find them online here.
-
Toiletries in straws
Whoever came up with this one, is practically a genius. If you’re only traveling with a carry-on and/or going somewhere for a short time, put your lotions, toothpaste, and skin care products into a straw and reseal with tape.
-
Contact lense cases for products
If you don’t have straws but do have a few contact lense cases around – put your lotions and whatnot in here! It’ll save you the trouble of having to go buy full sized products again when you reach your destination.

Use a big carry-on
This is especially a good idea if you’re going to be buying presents on a holiday! Even if you have a checked in luggage, it’s a better idea to extra room to bring things home, rather than playing tetris as you try to fit everything in!
-
Wear your heaviest/bulkiest clothes on the flight
This one is pretty self explanatory, it’ll save you so much room and time trying to fit everything into your bags! Especially if you’re going to a sunny vacationing spot, you’re probably going to wear your warmest/heaviest clothes on the flight anyway as airplanes can be pretty chilly.
-
Stuff your shoes
There’s plenty of space inside your shoes to put your smaller belongings. Socks and underwear work especially well.
-
Be strategic with undergarments
Put your underwear into your bra cups: save space AND the shape of your bra. It’s a win-win situation.
-
Don’t wrap gifts
Simply because you may have to unwrap them at security anyway.
-
Pack weirdly shaped items first
The bottom of your suitcase should be reserved for items that are weird and bulky, like shoes. It’s so much easier to put these in first and then put your clothes around them (they can conform to the shape), rather than packing your clothes and then shoving your shoes in at the end. Save yourself from the whole “I literally have to sit on my luggage to close it and I think the zippers may break” predicament.
-
Your carry-on is an emergency kit
The worst thing that can happen when you’re travelling is finding out your checked-in luggage has been lost. Trust me. Keep all of your personal and more important items in your carry-on, along with a few extra outfits. It’s not often an airline will lose your bag, but it won’t help to be prepared, and give you a little peace of mind.
